A Marketing Brainstorming Session

January 24, 2007

One of the best activities to start with when developing a marketing strategy is Marketing Brainstorming. In a very short amount of time, you can come up with a solid base by which you can launch many of your marketing campaigns. Here is the process:

  1. Spend a few minutes coming up with as many terms as you can to describe your company and what you do. Don’t worry if any of your ideas sound vague or aren’t entirely fitting — the idea is just to get as many of them down on paper as possible in a short amount of time. Words you might chose include "reliable", "software sales", or "dog sitting". Anything you come up with is okay for this list.
  2. Take your list to a keyword tool (there’s a list of them below) and use the various features available to come up with an even larger list.
  3. Take a break and walk away for a bit.
  4. Come back and look at your list. Is there anything else you want to add? If so, add it, and then take it back to a keyword tool.
  5. Take another break.
  6. Review your list in earnest. Are some of these not exactly descriptive of you and your business? For example, "online store" might be too vague, but "eBay shoe store" would say a lot more. As a general rule, the more obscure your business is, the more vague your terms have to be. A "shoe store" would often be search for by that name, but a "Western Horse Riding Instructor" might be looked up under "Pet Care and Training". Edit and add to your list as necessary.
  7. Once you feel your list is finished, you are done! DO NOT LOSE YOUR LIST! You now have the beginnings of a powerful marketing tool that will help people locate and utilize your services. This list can be used for advertising, search engine listing, press releases, and more!
  8. Review your list periodically, as your business changes, to see if it still fits. If it doesn’t, repeat the process to create new terms for your marketing campaigns.
